James Aber Duncan

James Aber Duncan of Homer, Alaska, passed away on Nov. 2, 2022. Jim was born in Athens, Georgia, on Dec. 30, 1971, attending public school in Clarke and Oconee counties, and graduating from Oconee County High School in 1991. In fulfillment of a longtime dream, he moved to Alaska in 1998 where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and many adventures. Always mechanically inclined, Jim worked for over 20 years as an FAA certified aircraft mechanic most recently as lead mechanic for Bald Mountain Air Service in Homer, which conducts tourist excursions to Katmai National Park for bear viewing and air service to all parts of Alaska.

Jim used his general handiness and technical aptitude to build and remodel several properties, including his own home in Homer. A lover of the outdoors, Jim completed a hike of the Appalachian Trail in 1997. He loved deer hunting and fishing in Georgia as well as moose hunting and fishing in Alaska. His adventurous spirit led him and his wife Dorothy to purchase property in the desert of Arizona where they would spend winter months in their RV. He loved his two sons fiercely and would include them in his adventures and instilled in them the same love of the great outdoors.

Jim is survived by his wife Dorothy (Melambianakis) Duncan and sons Noah James Duncan, 23, and Max Wilder Duncan, 3, of Homer, Alaska; parents James Robert Duncan and Rita Aber Duncan of Athens, Georgia; sisters, Carol Duncan Sweny (Mark) of Hopkinton, New Hampshire, Catherine Duncan Hodges (Phillip) of Decatur, Georgia, and Janet Duncan Edgar (Barry) of Winder, Georgia, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

A private celebration of life will be held with family and close friends in Georgia over the Thanksgiving week. A celebration will also be planned for friends in Homer after the holidays.
