Lúnasa performs next week

Irish band Lúnasa performs 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Mariner Theatre. Sponsored by the Homer Council on the Arts, Lúnasa also presents musical workshops at 2 p.m. Feb. 9. Admission is  $10 youth, $20 HCOA members and seniors, and $30 general admission, available at HCOA or the Homer Bookstore. Workshops are $15 adults, $10 youth.

“The hottest Irish acoustic group on the planet,” the New York Times called Lúnasa. An all-instrumental band, it includes instruments like the double bass as well as traditional Irish instruments like the fiddle, low whistles and uilleann pipes.

“We play a very diverse selection of music, including our own compositions, melodies from other Celtic regions such as Brittany, Galicia, Asturias and Scotland,” said member Cillian Vallely. “The melodies are played on the traditional instruments of pipes, fiddle and flute, but the rhythmic and harmonic style — the bass and guitar style — give the band a very contemporary sound.”
