Elaine L. Grantier

Elaine Lucille Grantier, 92, died of congestive heart failure on Feb. 18, 2022. She was at her home in Lake Havasu City, Arizona with her children by her side. Elaine was born Sept. 9, 1929, to Scoop and Lucille Borer. Her younger years were spent in Forsyth, Montana. After her high school graduation, she worked in the local bank before transferring to a job in Billings, Montana. She married her childhood friend, John Grantier, in 1950.

She worked as a court recorder and for an insurance company while her husband was in Japan during the Korean War. During the following years they moved around and eventually made a home for their family in Edmonds, Washington. She worked as secretary to the principal at Meadowdale Junior High School in Lynnwood, Washington. In 1975 the family moved to Cordova, Alaska, where John and Elaine co-owned and operated the Reluctant Fisherman Inn for six years. In 1981 they moved to Homer, where she worked for the Kenai Peninsula School District in several schools.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where she was active in the music ministry, trained lectors and eucharistic ministers, served on the finance council and was a member of the Women’s Guild. She also served on the South Peninsula Hospital Board and The Homer Foundation.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, John Grantier; her parents, Rudolph (Scoop) and Lucille Borer; her brother, Richard Borer, and her sister Julianna Kelly.

She is survived by her four children, Jean Grantier and husband Herb Waska of Las Vegas, Nevada, Edward Grantier and his wife Jennifer of Anchorage, Alaska, Mary Hoyt and husband John of Kuna, Idaho, and Carol Merritt of Kuna, Idaho, as well as two brothers, Thomas Borer and wife Jean of Nampa, Idaho, and Harry Borer of Parker, Arizona. She has 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass followed by a celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. April 30, 2022, at St. Patrick’s Parish, 2111 Muldoon Road, Anchorage, Alaska 99504. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The JEMCO Fund through The Homer Foundation, which supports music and youth programs.
