Glacier Kings Squirts win Cupid Shootout

The Homer Hockey Association Glacier Kings Squirts were undefeated and brought home the trophy at the Nikiski Cupid Shootout tournament on Valentine’s Day weekend.

The Glacier Kings Squirts is a recreational hockey team for 9 and 10 year olds in Homer.

“The kids played hard all weekend, 5 games in total. We had some great team work throughout the tournament with every squirt giving it 100% effort every time they were on the ice,” coach Kayla Owen said.

Owen said their main goal was to see the kids work together as a team on the ice.

“Whether it was in our offensive zone, spreading out and trying to open up the ice to create scoring opportunities, or protecting our goalies, or controlling our defensive zone and making good passes out of the zone, they did it all as a team and they did it very well! We had a lot of great passing and some awesome plays with lots of players scoring all weekend, some even being their first goal in a full ice game. Pretty cool to see!”

After four games, the Squirts won the championship game 5-1 against the KPHA Ice Hawks Blue.

The team includes Braylen Clarke, Eden Fox, Andrew Kita, Kainoa Neveras, Easton Owen, Tazlina Petska, Kyla Palin, Olivia Pitzman, Riley Scritchfield, Riley Stanislaw, Leo Velsko and Elijah Williams.

During the final game, Stanislaw and Velsko both scored one goal and Williams scored three.

“Us coaches and parents are so proud of this team,” Owen said. “They played awesome together and in rewarded for their hard work, they took home the 1st place trophy! It might be a small victory for some, but for these kids it was huge!”

The Glacier Kings Squirts will compete again next month during the 10U B State Tournament at Kevin Bell Arena in Homer.
