High school sports

Basketball: The boys’ and girls’ Homer basketball teams competed last weekend at the Southcentral Conference Championships held at Colony High School. Both teams took fourth place overall in the conference. Below are the breakdowns of each game.

Thursday

Girls: Mariners 40, Seahawks 32

Seward points: 6, 9, 8, 9 — for a total of 32; Homer points: 6, 3, 11, 20 — for a total of 40

3-point goals — Seward had 1 (VonBorstel); Homer had 2 (Veldstra).

Team fouls — Seward had 23, Homer had 18. Fouled out — Sullivan, Carroll.

Boys: Homer boys 54, Redington 25

Redington points: 8, 7, 6, 4 — for a total of 25; Homer points: 12, 11, 14, 17 — for a total of 54

Girls: Anchorage Christian School 79, Mariners 32

Other sports

Wrestling: In addition to Homer High School’s wrestling team and other youth clubs, Homer has the Popeye Wrestling Club. Their season has started, and below is a recap of a recent tournament from Storm Hanson-Cavasos:

“Popeye Wrestling club is having a great start to our 2018 wrestling season. This last weekend, Popeye Wrestling club took wrestlers to compete at the Kenai River Rumble Tournament, (in the) Greco, Freestyle and girls’ tournament.

“In Friday night’s Greco tournament, Lucas Barnard took gold with two pins. Jessica Clucas and Alex Hicks both placed first with an exhibition match to bring home gold.

“Alice Clucas brought home bronze and Declan Barnard wrestled great with one win a technical fall, 11-0.

“Saturday, Popeye had a good showing for the freestyle and girls tournament. Mina Cavasos brought home gold in the girls division with a pin and technical fall giving.

“Cecilia Fitzpatrick brought home gold as well in the girls’ division with two pins and an exciting final match. Alex Hicks also brought home gold and had a great exhibition match.

“In second place for Popeye were: Seth I’nama, McKenzie Hansen, Timmy Cissney, Emma Cissney, Gabe Bradshaw and Luca Fitzpatrick.

“In third place for Popeye were: Josh Bradshaw, Burke Mellen, Branson Mellen, Kanin Kumfer, Murph Farmer, and Jocelyn White. Popeye wrestling also had Hayden Kumfer, Grayson Hansen, Flora Fitzpatrick, Allen white, Beck Mellen, Brooks Mellen and Cayleb Diaz.

“Next weekend there will be a scrimmage between, Popeye Wrestling and the Anchor Kings.”

Skiing: Skiers all the way from Anchorage joined several familiar Homer faces to tackel this year’s Kachemak Bay Nordic Ski Marathon. Below are the full results:
