Yowzah, has spring finally arrived in this year’s Not Current In This Time Zone season.The other day the Betster broke out into a smile at the sound of a floatplane taking off on Beluga Lake. Yee haw! The ice broke up.

We bird nerds have been absolutely giddy the past week with daily arrivals of some new shorebird. Yup, it’s the 21st Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival. From now until Sunday it’s just birds, birds, birds all day, all the time.

You can imagine astronauts up there in the International Space Station looking down and seeing vast migrations of birds winging their way north. Well, not literally. The birds are so small, and space, as Carl Sagan liked to say, is really, really big. We live on a huge planet that little critters make feel smaller.

So polish up those binoculars, patch up your XtraTufs and get outside, because there’s lots to do this weekend, like these Best Bets:

BEST WING IT BET: A longtime shorebird festival event is the On the Wing concert, starting at 8 p.m. today at the Homer Theatre. Some of Homer’s finest musicians, poets and filmmakers celebrate in song and art our little avian buddies. Admission is $10 at the door or the Homer Chamber of Commerce.

BEST ART AND ABOUT BET: Starting out or almost graduating, student artists from preschool to high school show their art on Friday. Catch an art opening with Rosana Myer’s students at the Homer Council on the Arts and work by teenagers at Flex School. Both openings run 5 to 7 p.m.

BEST LITTLE BUSINESS BET: For Lemonade Day, an annual event encouraging young entrepreneurs, children will be selling all sorts of cool things on Saturday across the nation, including Homer. You can buy crafts, specialty teas and, yes, lemonade. Look for vendors around town. See story in Business and Real Estate, page 3.

BEST YO MOMMA BET: Sweetheart, your love is all a mother could want, but OK, if you want to take Mama out on Mother’s Day, you could take her to the Mother’s Day breakfast at the Anchor Point Senior Center from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday. Every mom gets a rose.

BEST BIG DRAMA BET: Don’t miss the end-of-year performances by Homer High School drama students. The class performs five comedies starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Homer Council on the Arts. Admission is $8 adults, $5 students at the door.
