Dorothy (Dotty) Florence Hay Stutes

Dorothy (Dotty) Florence Hay Stutes, 92, died peacefully at home on May 22, 2021, with family by her side.

Born Dec. 5, 1928, in Manhattan, New York, she lived her early life in the city until she met and married a young Merchant Marine officer, Lloyd James Stutes. Within three years, they had two children, Patricia and Stormy. In May of 1952, the small family drove up the AlCan Highway and arrived in Homer, Alaska. Six months later, she had another daughter, Gale. They moved to Anchor Point around 1955 and had two more daughters, Mona and Fleurette.

Two of her children were born at home with the help of her husband, Lloyd, while the other kids were sent out to play. Although Dotty loved her lifestyle, it was one of hardship as a homesteader, devoted mother and wife. She and her husband both lived on their homestead until the very end.

Her sisters Gloria and Violet, and her husband, Lloyd, preceded her in death. Her remaining younger sister, Elaine, lives in New York City, and brother, Kenny, lives in Australia. The lives of her five children, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been enriched by the lessons, advice and love bestowed upon them. She will be remembered in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Her life and legacy will be celebrated at a later date on the Stutes’ homestead in Anchor Point.
