Homer High School’s basketball teams swept their recent games against two peninsula competitors, the Seward Seahawks and the Nikiski Bulldogs.
The Mariners faced the Seahawks on Saturday, where the Homer girls won 30-24 and the boys won 61-49. Then on Tuesday, Homer hosted the Bulldogs, with the Mariner girls winning 55-25 and the boys securing a 50-29 win.
The Homer girls moved to 3-2 in overall season standings, while the boys’ win against Nikiski propelled them to 4-1.
Saturday
Homer girls 30, Seward 24
The Lady Mariners controlled the game all the way through, leading 10-6 after the first quarter and 15-10 at the half. They widened that lead to 21-13 in the third quarter and finished 30-24.
For the Mariners, senior Laura Inama led with 12 points. Katelyn Lemme led the way for Seward with 10.
Homer boys 61, Seward 49
Saturday’s game against Seward wasn’t a runaway for the Mariners, until they pulled ahead big in the fourth quarter. Seward was up 17-12 after the first quarter, but Homer was able to turn that around to lead 31-27 at the half. Seward took back the lead once more, bringing the score to 39-36 after the third quarter, but the Mariners went on to score another 22 points in the fourth, securing the game.
For Homer, Josiah Raymond led the team with 21 points, followed by Parker Lowney with 12, Clayton Beachy with 12 and Eyoab Knapp with 10. Lowney sunk two three-pointers, while Beachy had one as well.
For Seward, Trey Ingalls led with 14 points. Sam Koster had 13 points and Max Pfeiffenberger had 12.
Tuesday
Homer girls 55, Nikiski 25
Avenging their season opener loss to the Bulldogs, the Mariners got control of the game on Tuesday, leading 19-16 after the half and surging to 33-20 in the third, before winning 55-25.
Delilah Harris led Homer with 14 points, followed by Hannah Hatfield with 20 and Sailey Rhodes with eight. Rhodes also put up two three-pointers. Lillian Carstens led Nikiski with 12 points.
Homer boys 50, Nikiski 29
The Mariner boys led by only three points at halftime against the Bulldogs, but pulled ahead to 34-22 after the third quarter and finished up 50-29 after the fourth.
For Homer, Beachy led with 20 points, followed by Raymond with 12 and Knapp with 10.
Drew Handley led the Bulldogs with 12 points, all three-pointers. He was helped by Caileb Payne with six points and Brady Bostic with five.
