Locals got the chance to taste something new over the weekend when a national cooking show rolled into Homer as part of its statewide competition.

The Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race” is hosted by Tyler Florence, and features teams of chefs that “race” from town to town to participate in cooking challenges and try to out-sell their competition. A food truck team is eliminated in each town or city, with the winners taking home a $50,000 prize, according to the show’s website.

On its tour through Alaska, the show made stops in Anchorage and Palmer, where teams and trucks were eliminated, before making its way to Homer. Five trucks set up shop in the Homer Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center parking lot, as well as in front of Grace Ridge Brewery and Alice’s Champagne Palace.

The trucks competing in Homer were: BFDfoodtruck (breakfast for dinner), Meatball Mamas, Tasty Balls, Some Like it Tot and Querencia Mia. They began by shopping for supplies at Safeway for an opening night on Saturday. Cooking and sales for Homer residents continued throughout Sunday.

The trucks proved a novel attraction for local residents, who queued up in long lines for tastes of the food truck cuisine despite wind, clouds and rain over the weekend.

The show competitors had not yet revealed their next Alaska location as of Wednesday.
