The Homer Invite will not happen this weekend.
“There’s maybe about 15 meters of ice that could just not thaw out. There’s 30 meters of clear sailing that are perfectly dry, but about five or six inches of ice on parts of the track,” said Homer High School Head Track Coach Bill Steyer.
It was hoped the Invite would be the inaugural event for the new track.
“We had 12 teams signed up, including teams from outside of the district,” said Steyer. “People are starting to get word of our track.”
Saturday, weather permitting and one or two lanes becoming ice-free, Steyer is planning some team time trials for the Mariners, with an eye toward the Skyview Invite in Soldotna April 26-27.
“That’s a standard high school track meet, with prelims on Friday and half of the field events, then finals and the other half of field events on Saturday,” said Steyer of the Skyview event.
Borough championships will be held on the Homer High track May 3 and 4.
