Stewart W. Collie

October 30, 1948 – July 25, 2020

Stewart Ward Collie, 71, formerly of Homer, passed away July 25, 2020 in his birth town of Metropolis, Illinois.

Stewart is the son of John W. Collie and Felva M. Collie.

The Collie family arrived in the Territory of Alaska in 1957, topping Baycrest Hill on July 7, from the Heartland to the Northland via the rugged AlCan Highway. All agreed that this would be home.

Stewart grew up working alongside his dad and brother at Collie’s Concrete Products, the first concrete business on the lower Kenai Peninsula. Many of their first block structures are still visible throughout Homer, including Cycle Logical and Duncan House on Pioneer Avenue.

Stewart branched out with other jobs, including janitorial services at the then-Homer Hospital and Anchorage School District. He was a short order cook in Alaska, Seattle, Las Angeles, Las Vegas and New York City.

Stewart loved country western music and dressed accordingly. He collected CDs and made many trips to Nashville for Grand Ole Opry shows and to see performers he admired. Stewart’s trimmed gray hair, beard and attire made him a look-alike for Kenny Rogers, which he loved. Stewart had a fondness for flashy cars and trucks and most recently was delighted with a new Bosch electric assist bicycle.

Stewart moved to southern Illinois in 2002. He missed Alaska and always asked about his Homer friends and acquaintances.

Stewart is proceeded in death by his parents and one nephew, Aric Collie.

He is survived by his sister, Johnnie Osborn (husband Philip) of Homer; brother, Jack Collie of Homer; four nieces; six great-nieces; three great-nephews and one great-great-niece.

There will be no services. His cremains will be interred with his mother at Boaz, Anderson Cemetery, Illinois.
