At the start of the new school year, Kenai Peninsula schools geared up for lean times, with more than $2 million in budget cuts for the 2000-01 year. Homer High School did get 100 new “lightning-fast” Dell computers and a faster Internet connection. Then-Homer High Principal Ron Keffer said the technology would be an asset to students. Despite the budget cuts, Keffer said he was positive about the school.

After the Legislature failed to raise a gas tax to pay for road maintenance, Gov. Steve Cowper vetoed $8 million from the state transportation budget. That meant maintenance could be cut for state roads like Diamond Ridge Road, Skyline Drive, the North Fork Road and Kachemak Drive.

Nelda and Red Calhoun opened the Clean In, a coin-operated laundry, on Main Street just south of Pioneer Avenue. The Clean In also offered spacious showers for $1.25 each with soap and towels furnished. A grand opening was planned for when Red Calhoun returned from fishing.
