Amber J. Klopp

March 26, 1922 – May 3, 2020

Amber J. Klopp, 98, passed away May 3, 2020 at her home in Homer, Alaska.

A memorial service to honor Amber will be announced at a later date due to COVID-19 virus.

Amber was born March 26, 1922 and grew up in Holton, Indiana. She joined the Marine Corps, where she achieved the rank of Master Sargent. She met Edwin Klopp during World War II, when they both were on leave, and kept their correspondence going until they were married several years after the war was over. After the war, in 1947, Amber and her bother Don travelled up the Al-Can highway to Anchorage from Indiana.

On Feb. 2, 1951, she married Edwin Klopp. After the wedding she accompanied Ed to Bettles where he was stationed with the CAA (Federal Aviation Administration). Over the next several years they were stationed in Unalakleet, Glennallen, Talkeetna, and finally to Homer in 1966.

Amber was active as a member of St. John The Baptist Catholic Church for over 55 yrs. She dedicated her time and efforts at Pick and Pay from the time of its inception. She was also an avid gardener, working in her yard throughout the summer. She was well known for having summer strawberry festivals. She enjoyed participating in the Alaska Pioneers and Red Hats.

“Mom was amazing. She was able to sew, cook or make just about anything as if she had done it hundreds of times. Later in life, when we would ask her for a favorite recipe she would simply say ‘If you like it, add more, if you don’t, don’t add as much.’ The recipes never turned out as good as Mom’s. She was always supportive to us, her family and friends without a second thought. She will be fondly remembered by her family and friends as a quiet, gentle and kind soul,” her family said.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edwin J. Klopp; brother, Don Jeffries; and sisters, Irma McKnew and Anna Whitman.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Marstrander and husband Morten of Oslo, Norway; sons Richard Klopp and wife GayLynn, of Homer, and David Klopp and his wife Tammy of Federal Way, Washington; granddaughters, Sienna Klopp of Omaha, Nebraska, and Serena Klopp of Bozeman, Montana; and grandson Justin Erickson of Vancouver, Washington.

Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
