Masks reminiscent of the children’s tale “Where the Wild Things Are” adorned the walls of a local coffee shop last month in celebration on youth artistic efforts.
Students at Fireweed Academy created decorative face masks as an art project through the Artists in Schools program.
Artist Gail Baker was the artist in residence for the school, and helped the students make masks depicting difference kinds of creatures they thought of or came up with in the process.
The masks were shown at an art exhibit opening at K-Bay Caffé on March 5 in Homer, where students, parents and members of the community could explore the creations as well as the inspiration behind them.
The Artists in Schools program in Alaska is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alaska State Council on the Arts, and the Rasmuson Foundation. The local Homer coordinator for the program is Bunnell Street Arts Center.
