Homer Children’s Services received a a state Mental Health Trust Authority grant of $27,000 to improve and make more accessible its facilities. It also got a $25,700 from from the Alaska Children’s Trust to continue another year of its Parents As Teachers program. That program provides parent support through resources and activities, such as parent group meetings.

In a civil suit filed by the city, a judge ordered two men who vandalized a mural to pay $1,600 in restoration costs and $10,000 in punitive damages. On Halloween in 1985, Dan Jerrel Jr. and Andrew Sladen sprayed red paint on the mural Homer artist Tom Reed painted on a retaining wall at the corner of Main Street and Pioneer Avenue. A criminal conviction against Jerrel was thrown out in 1988. Sladen got 10 days in jail.

At the regular meeting of the Homer Planning Commission on July 5, members attempted to bring some order into the names of Homer streets and avenues in prepartion for a comprehensive planning map. At the July 6 meeting of the Homer Volunteer Fire Department and the Homer City Council, members discussed plans for a fire hall-police station building.
