The State of Alaska Department of Transportation is announcing a temporary road closure of the Old Sterling Highway between Anchor Point Road and the Borough Waste Transfer Sight, for repairs to the abutment of bridge #910. The closure will take place at approximately 8 a.m. Monday, July 30 and run through 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8. The Homer Native Plant Society will host a field trip called “Geology, Plant Life, and Forest of the Diamond Creek Trail” at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 28 at the Diamond Creek Trailhead with Dr. Ed Berg. On this 2-mile round-trip walk, Berg will show and discuss the geological and botanical highlights of the trail’s unique terrain. Wear sturdy shoes for a descent and ascent of a possibly slippery trail (from rain) and use walking sticks if you have them. Bring lunch, water, bug dope, and dress for the weather. The Homer Community Food Pantry is seeking volunteers who could provide 90 minutes a week to pick up donated grocery items. Call 235-1968 to volunteer or for more information.

Kachemak Crane Watch asks that residents report crane sightings. Sandhill Crane colts have hatched. These colts are small and very susceptible to predation by dogs and cats. If you see crane colts, please keep your pets under control. Report observations of Sandhill Cranes colts to Kachemak Crane Watch at reports@cranewatch.org or by calling 235-6262. Include date, time, location, number of colts, and your contact information so Crane Watch members can call for more information.

Anchor Point Senior Citizens

The Anchor Point Senior Center on Milo Fritz Road is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday. The center serves Thursday night dinners starting at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Bingo is at 6:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. on Friday nights. The Helping Hands Thrift Store is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Exercise sessions are at 10 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. For information, call 235-7786.

Friendship Center

Homer Senior Citizens

Homer Senior Citizens lunch is open to seniors and guests and is served noon-1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The menu for this week is: Thursday, baked ham; Friday, almond crusted salmon; Monday, baked ziti; Tuesday, barbecue beef brisket. The schedule for the rest of the week is not yet available.

Strong Women classes are 1:30-2:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Homer Senior Center. Zumba Gold classes with Maria are 11 a.m.-noon Tuesdays and 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Homer Senior Center.

There will be a public reading by award-winning visiting writer Hannah Tinti at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 6, co-sponsored by 49 Writers. Tinti is the author of three books of fiction. Her short story collection, “Animal Crackers,” was a runner-up for the PEN/Hemingway award. Her best-selling novel, “The Good Thief,” is a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her new novel, “The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley” has been optioned to become a film. It has been nominated for an Edgar Award, and was named a Best Book of 2017 by NPR, The Washington Post and Paste Magazine.

Heartsaver CPR/AED from 8 a.m. to noon at SPH Training Center on July 27 for $50 per person. This covers infant/child/adult CPR and use of an AED.

Join South Peninsula Hospital for the monthly “Walk with a Doc” where Larry Lawson, MD, Medical Oncologist and Hematologist will talk on respiratory cancers, including prevention and new treatment options. Lung and tracheal cancers are the leading cause of cancer deaths on the Southern Kenai Peninsula. The event is at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4 at SPARC (600 Sterling Hwy. next to Homer Middle School). After the brief presentation by Dr. Lawson, the participants will spend the rest of the hour walking at your own pace and talking with the physician.
