Summer is truly upon us now, Homerites.

Whether you’re lounging out on your front deck watching mother moose cross through your yard with their young, taking to the waves in search of salmon or dusting off the grill for your first summer barbecue, you can feel secure in the knowledge that sunny days are here again.

Now that the days are longer, there are plenty of things to do to fill that extra time. Take a walk (even if it’s just down the Spit to get some poutine), take a hike across the bay or take in a show — it matters not. Just make sure to take advantage of all the summer opportunities out there, like these Best Bets:

BEST BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT BET: Homer Council on the Arts is providing an opportunity for string instrument musicians to take a master class with renowned artists Cecylia Barczyk (cello) and Emmanuel Borowsky (violin and viola). Through a twist of fate, these musicians will be in the area for three days, donating their time and expertise to burgeoning and accomplished musicians across the Kenai Peninsula. This class is open to everyone. Bring your instruments and prepare to play something (but you don’t have to). This class will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Homer Council on the Arts gallery on West Pioneer Avenue. There is a suggested donation $20 that will go toward student scholarship funds.

BEST REMEMBRANCE BET: If you thought that’s all the Homer Council on the Arts was up to, boy do we have some news for you! HCOA will hold a celebration of Mary Epperson’s birthday and their 2019 Annual Meeting on Friday as well. These free events will honor a paragon of the Homer art community and provide meaningful connections with other creatives and supporters of the arts. Outdoor festivities are from 4-7 p.m. with music, cupcakes, popcorn and a community mural painting with artists Carla Cope and Sarah Banks. The annual meeting is at 7 p.m. It’s open to the public, with music and the presentation of the 2019 Annual Arts Awards in the gallery after First Friday opening of Karen Roush’s exhibit “Abstract Metaphors.”

BEST BIRDING BET: Betsy Webb will lead a Birding by Ear walk on Kachemak Heritage Land Trust’s Calvin and Coyle Nature Trail at 9 a.m. this Saturday. This is for birders of all skill levels, not just beginners. The Calvin and Coyle trail is at the end of Mariner Drive, approximately 1 mile east of Homer on East End Road. BEST NATURE BET: This Saturday is Opening Day for the 2019 summer season at the Wynn Nature Center. The center is hosting a potluck from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, so get out your special recipe out and head on up to the ridge for fun with friends and family. Celebrate the start of summer by exploring the trails, the Daisy Lee Bitter Cabin and Natural Playspace.

BEST RELAXING BET: Starting this Sunday, there will be Tibetan Buddhist Meditation at 5 p.m. every Sunday at Many Rivers Studio. For more information, text Rinpoche at 907-435-1655.
