Upcoming events

General:

There will be a Slush Cup & Rowan Springer Day held Sunday, April 7 from 1-3 p.m. at the Ohlson Mountain Rope Tow. The event is to support Alaska Youth for Environmental Action. There is a suggested donation of $10-$25. Try to make your way across the pond via skis, snowboard, sled or kayak. Costumes are welcome. There will be a silent auction, raffle prizes, food and music. There will also be prizes for the best costumes.

Kids are invited to join Native Youth Olympics in Homer. Native Youth Olympics (NYO) is a collection of games that mimic the skills needed by Alaska Native People to survive and thrive in the Alaskan terrain and climate. The Homer team accepts all students, grades 1-12, regardless of ethnicity. Practices are twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Track and Field: Homer’s track and field team will compete in the Big C Relays this Friday and Saturday at The Dome in Anchorage.

Soccer: The girls soccer team will host Soldotna High School at home at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 9. The boys team will also play Soldotna, but in an away game at 6 p.m. the same day.

Baseball: The baseball team will host Kenai Central High School at home at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24.

Softball:

Homer’s softball team kicks its season off by traveling to Kodiak this weekend to participate in the Third Annual Emerald Isle Invitational for a five-game stint.

In review

Youth wrestling:

Local youth wrestlers performed well at the End of the Road Greco Wrestling Tournament held the weekend of March 29-30 in Nikiski.

For the Anchor Kings, Isaiah Marroquin did not place, but bumped up an age division to wrestle on Friday. Teammates Landyn Woods, Declan Barnard and CJ Burns all placed second in their respective weight categories, according to a release from Head Coach Bubba Wells.

Brayden Woods and Carter Woodhead both placed third in their weight classes.

During the freestyle portion of the tournament, teammates Weston Stover, Colton Jones, Evan Spencer, Miles Tressler and Carter Woodhead each took first in their weight classes. It was the first time these five wrestlers won at a tournament, Wells wrote.

Russell Nyvall took first place for the third tournament in a row. Had the fastest team pin with a fall time of 16 seconds, Wells wrote.

Isabella Munoz participated in her first tournament at the age of 4, and placed second. Her sister, Rachel Munoz, also took second in her age division. Teammates Madalynn Simpson, Hank Adcox, Landyn Woods and Josh Bradshaw took second place in their categories.

Azariah Ridgely, Tucker Jones, Alex Shea, Gabe Bradshaw, Alana Crane, Oak Jakmanee and Logan Counts took third.

This week, the Anchor Kings will participate in the Tri Valley Tournament at Colony High School. Greco wrestling begins at 5 p.m. Friday and freestyle at 10 a.m. Saturday.
