Homer the cat had an adventure when, while checking out a food trailer at Eagle Quality Center (now Safeway) on Jan. 22, someone shut the door on him. He got a ride up to Anchorage and spent the weekend at the Carrs Gottstein Foods warehouse until Monday when workers opened the trailer. Naming him “Homer,” the workers caught the thin black cat and flew him back to Homer and the animal shelter in hopes someone would identify him.

Angel, a half-Siamese, half-Himalayan cat, showed her true background: full-bred watch mammal. Recently adopted by the Cathy and Ted Wilson family through Homer Animal Friends, Angel woke up her people when a log drying outside the fireplace insert caught fire. Normally timid with a quiet meow, Angel began howling and walking across the Wilsons as they slept. They woke up and found the burning log and smoke.

“The smoke alarm didn’t go off. The alarm was the cat,” Cathy Wilson said. “We really believe she saved our lives.”
