With Alaska North Slope crude oil dropping to a record low of $8.61 a barrel, local gas prices also fell. Trailside Gas posted a price of $1.18 a gallon. A Tesoro executive said gas prices were comparable to those in the 1970s and were the lowest they have been since the U.S. Department of Energy started tracking them in the 1990s. Adjusted for inflation, $1.18 in 1998 would be worth $1.38 in 2018.

A Kenai man alleged to have taken a 14-foot fiberglass salmon from Ninilchik Fish Mounts in November was charged with third-degree crminal mischief and theft. The fish disappeared on Nov. 5 and a note was left behind that read, “If you want to see your fish alive, publish this in the Peninsula Clarion.”

The Homer Chamber of Commerce planned a big welcome for the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Ironwood when the buoy tender was to arrive on Jan. 5, the first Coast Guard vessel to be homeported here. The welcome included a brief ceremony on the Spit, a motorcade to town, a band and skit at Homer High School, and a wild game dinner.
