There was no resting for the team as they traveled to Nikiski that same weekend for the Top Dog Invite, where the Mariners took third place.
The 21-team invitational involved 32-man brackets resulting in 16 places. The girls had a bracket of their own for one weight class, and a round-robin format was used for other weight classes with less wrestlers.
This is the first year that Nikiski has run an individual wrestling tournament, according to Homer Athletic Director Chris Perk. Homer earned third place by racking up more than 200 points, he wrote in an email.
“The girls team again wrestled well winning three different weight classes,” Perk wrote.
Senior Seth Inama was not able to wrestle at the tournament because he was taking the SAT, but Homer still got a championship out of senior Wayne Newman at 140 pounds, who pinned #2 ranked Moses Korth from Glennallen, ranked No. 2, and then went on to beat 4A opponent Riley Harris from South Anchorage, ranked No. 3.
The team will travel to ACS this weekend for a Division II meet with defending state champions, the Bethel Warriors.
