The Homer wrestling team took sixth place at the Monster Bash Duals on Friday and Saturday in Anchorage.
Homer lost to Colony 60-12, defeated Service 45-16, lost to Wasilla 54-23, lost to Palmer 51-21, lost to South 60-18, defeated Kodiak 34-30, defeated Eagle River 52-30 and lost to Lathrop 45-35.
Seth Inama went 8-0 at 125 pounds and Jadin Mann went 7-0 at 285 pounds to lead Homer, while Wayne Newman was 7-1 at 140.
There also was a Women’s Monster Bash Tournament. Mischelle Wells at 130 took second and McKenzie Cook at 160 took first for the Mariners in Day 2 wrestling at the event.
Sophomore Sadie Blake at 125 won six out of eight matches, earning a bronze medal, according to a round-up of events from assistant coach Chris Perk.
“Her win over Zoe Covington from Colony 13-8 was a quality win, as Zoe was ranked No. 6 in the state,” Perk wrote.
Cook went up to the 160 pound bracket and challenged Madison Ellis from South Anchorge. Ellis is also an All-American wrestler, according to Perk.
Cook was able to pin Ellis and three other opponents to earn (first) place,” he wrote. “Teammate Mariah Grimes, a sophomore, nearly pulled off a big upset against Ellis. Grimes put Ellis to her back in a head and arm, but Ellis was able to bridge and then reverse Grimes. Mariah took (third) place, pinning two other opponents.”
The Mariners will duel Grace Christian School at 6 p.m. tonight in Homer, then go to Nikiski for a two day tourney over the weekend.
