After counting absentee, questioned and special needs votes, the Homer Election Canvass Board and the Kenai Peninsula Borough found no change in last Tuesday’s unofficial election results.
In Homer, Ken Castner held on to his lead in the election for mayor, with a total of 829 votes, or 53 percent, to David Lewis with 731 votes, or 46 percent.
The results also didn’t change for Homer City Council. In the three-way race for two council seats with three-year terms, Donna Aderhold finished first with 956 votes, followed by Heath Smith with 788 votes. Deb Lowney received 646 votes. Lowney suspended her campaign last month and announced that she did not seek election to city council because of family reasons. With Aderhold and Smith re-elected, the current council make up remains the same.
In the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly District 9 race, incumbent Willy Dunne won re-election over challenger Troy Jones. Dunne received 802 votes, or 55.46 percent, to 637 votes, or 44.05 percent for Jones. Part of the Jones homesteading family on East End Road, Jones won in the Fox River and Anchor Point precincts, but Dunne prevailed in the Diamond Ridge, Kachemak Bay/Seldovia, and Kachemak City/Fritz Creek precincts. Though borough races are nonpartisan, the Alaska Republican Party and District 31 Republican Party backed Jones.
Results also didn’t change for the three propositions. Proposition 1, a school bond proposal to build a new Kachemak Selo school, failed. Two hospital service area propositions passed: Proposition 2, to expand the Central Peninsula Hospital Service Area boundary, and Proposition 3, to expand the South Kenai Peninsula Hospital Service Area.
The borough-wide voter turnout was 22.79 percent.
The city of Homer certified results at its Monday regular meeting, with Castner, Aderhold and Smith sworn in at the end of the meeting. The borough assembly certified the results at its Tuesday regular meeting.
