The Lady Mariners saw a successful weekend of volleyball played on their home court.
They first swept Redington High School in a 3-0 game, winning 25-11, 25-8 and 25-6. This moved the Mariners to 4-1 in the Southcentral Conference and 4-2 in nontournament play.
Top players were Brianna Hetrick with four kills, 15 assists, four digs and seven aces; Karmyn Gallios with six kills, a block and 10 aces; Tonda Smude with five kills, a block and a dig; Marina Carroll with four kills, three blocks and four digs; and Laura Inama with three assists, two digs and five aces.
Saturday saw another sweep of 3-0 against Houston High School, with Homer winning all three games 25-15, 25-16 and 25-16.
Top players were Brianna Hetrick with 26 assists, four kills and five digs; Kelli Bishop with 10 kills, two aces and 10 digs; Marina Carroll with 10 kills, two aces, five digs and a block; Tonda Smude with five kills, an ace and three blocks; and Laura Inama with six aces and three assists.
Coach Sara Pennington said she was pleased with how the team has been improving. She said that while they won both games, their serving was much improved against Houston compared to the Redington game.
Heading into the Grace Tourney this Friday and Saturday, Pennington said she hopes her players can learn from their games with teams playing at a higher level, and that they continue to beat the teams they should be able to beat.
