Upcoming events
Volleyball: The Lady Mariners will host Seward High School at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. They play Joe Redington next Friday at 6:30 p.m., also at home.
Cross country: Homer runners will compete in the regional meet on Saturday in Kenai. The state meet in on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Batlett High School in Anchorage.
Football: The Mariners will host Seward High School on Friday for Homecoming, with the game starting at 5 p.m.
Swim and Dive: Homer swimmers will travel to the Seward Invitational on Saturday, which starts at 10 a.m.
In review
Volleyball
The Lady Mariners came back against Kenai Central High School during a home game last Thursday, winning three of four games.
The Mariners moved to 2-1 in the Southcentral Conference after beating the Kardinals, who were victorious over Homer when last they met at the Homer Jamboree.
The Mariners won three games at 25-12, 25-19 and 25-20, while Kenai won a game at 25-18.
Top players — Brianna Hetrick, 30 assists, eight digs, five aces and three kills; Kelli Bishop, seven kills, 11 digs and two aces; Karmyn Gallios, 10 kills and three digs; and Marina Carroll, 11 kills, 13 digs and one ace.
Visiting Soldotna High School for an away game on Tuesday, the Mariners suffered a three game loss in the match.
SoHi, a Division I team, bowled over the Lady Mariners, a Division II team, with scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-14. Homer rests at 10-10 overall after the match.
Top players — Briana Hetrick, nine assists, three digs, two kills and two aces; Marina Carroll, three kills and five digs; and Karmyn Gallios, three kills and four digs.
Football
The Mariners lost to fellow Peninsula Conference team Ketchikan last Sautrday 48-12 on their home field in Homer.
The win moved the Kings to 2-1 in the conference and 4-1 overall. Homer now rests at 0-2 and 0-6.
Quarterback Anthony Kalugin, a junior, scored the first touchdown of the game with a 10-yard run with 5:51 left in the first quarter. He also scored Homer’s second touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Kalugin three interceptions to Ketchikan’s Brendan Wong’s one. Wong threw for 325 yards, while Kalugin threw for 180.

Cross-country
The Homer boys took second and the girls took third at the Kenai Peninsula Borough cross-country meet last Saturday.
Junior Autumn Daigle fell short of repeating last year’s victory in the race, finishing second to Kenai senior Jaycie Calvert. Daigle finished with a time of 21 minutes, 11 seconds, while Calvert raced ahead at 20:15. Homer’s top male finisher of the 5 kilometer race was Luciano Fasulo, claiming third for the boys with a time of 17:48.

Swim and Dive
Homer sophomore Madison Story took the crow during last Friday’s Pentathlon at Soldotna High School.
The event pits all participating swimmers against each other during five swim events, which are combined. the best combined overall time wins. Story earned that time in 2 minutes, 54.78 seconds, just eking out a win over Seward freshman Lydia Jacoby, whose overall time was 2:54.92.
The five events are a 50-yard butterfly, 50-yard backstroke, 50-yard freestyle, 50-yard breaststroke and a 100-yard individual medley. Story won the butterfly, backstroke and freestyle. In winning the Pentathlon, she repeated her title from last year, when she won as a freshman.
Homer senior Clayton Arndt finished third overall for the boys. The girls team came in second as a group at the event, while the Homer boys came in third. Below are more results:
