How does that adage go? Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. That’s what’s happening this week at the Homer News. With one reporter gone on a much-deserved vacation and another recovering from an unexpected health problem, well, putting out this week’s paper has required more than a little bit of magic — and even more help from our friends.
It’s often said that it takes a village to raise a child. Well, this week the village is lending a hand to get us to press on time. Everyone at the News is pitching in — making real the small print of those job descriptions that say something like: “Whatever is required to get the paper out.” Spouses, friends and neighbors also have stepped forward. There’s nothing like a little crisis to help us realize that our community and our colleagues are the real “Best Bets.”
With the sun continuing to shine, just a walk outside is a good Best Bet. But while you’re reveling in the season, you might want to consider a few of these other Best Bets:
BEST GET YOUR GREENS BET: It’s time for the Homer Garden Club annual plant sale. Be there from 11 a.m. until noon Saturday at the Homer Chamber of Commerce and you can get flowers, vegetables, trees and more. Volunteers are needed and should be there by 9 a.m. Additional plant donations always appreciated.
BEST UP IN THE AIR BET: Have you ever dreamed of flying while sitting in your lawn chair enjoying the sun? So did Larry Walters who inspired the show “Up” playing at Pier One Theatre on the Homer Spit the next two weekends. Come and see how this one dream can affect an entire family.
BEST PARTY IN PURPLE BET: Preparations begin for the Relay for Life benefitting the American Cancer Society on June 7-8. Come down to the Subway parking lot at 4 p.m. Wednesday to Paint the Town Purple and celebrate with people who love life and the people who are living it with them.
