State Parks artist in residence speaks at Bunnell

Artist in Residence Sheryl Maree Reily presents a talk on her art and residency from 6-7 p.m. today at Bunnell Street Arts Center. Through a program administered by Alaska State Parks – Kachemak Bay State Park, for the past five years Reily has been working on a project called ReWilding. A multidisciplinary artist, she travels in her mobile art studio, photographing the urban-wilderness interface, conducting interviews and participating in Alaska wilderness based artist residencies, gathering material for the project.

ReWilding is a series of encounters between man and nature, sited in wilderness locations and urban structures. Using three-dimensional mapping to project video or still images onto non-flat surfaces, including manmade and organic structures, ReWilding will create immersive events that deepen environmental awareness and position human activity in direct relationship to the natural world.

Burning Basket starts soon

The annual Burning Basket build week starts Sept. 2 and runs noon to 8 p.m. daily through Sept. 8 at Mariner Park on the Homer Spit. The community is invited to visit and help build the interactive, impermanent art project led by local artist Mavis Muller. At 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, the community is given the basket, Dream — A Basket of Remembrance & Unburdening, and invited to interact with it through decorations, messages and other artifacts placed in the basket. At sundown Dream will be ignited and burned. For more information, call 907-299-1478 or visit www.facebook.com/BurningBasketProject. This is a free, no-alcohol, no-dogs event.
