Hospice of Homer is bringing its annual fundraising golf tournament to Homer on June 15. While the event worked well over the last three years at Fireweed Meadows Golf Course in Anchor Point, the opportunity to hold it at Shoreline Golf at 6.5-mile East End Road was irresistible.

Now that Beth and Dave Schroer, along with their son and daughter in-law Frank and Ellen Schroer, have reopened the 9-hole, 10-acre course, hospice officials hope the closer proximity will increase local enthusiasm for the already popular event.

In its fourth year, the golf tournament is one of three major fundraisers for Hospice of Homer that help raise revenue for the worthy efforts of one of Homer’s longest standing nonprofit organizations. 

Hospice’s other major fundraisers include the Fun Run and Holidays for Hospice.

Launched in 1985 by Jean Hatfield, the mission of Hospice of Homer is to “provide comfort, dignity and choice through care, support and education for those facing end-stage illness, the transition process of dying, or the frail and isolated.”

 With three part-time staffers and more than 60 volunteers Hospice of Homer provides an invaluable service to families and individuals on the southern Kenai Peninsula who are going through difficult and often uncharted territory.  Many who have sought the help of hospice speak with heartfelt gratitude for the guidance and unwavering compassion they have received from the staff and the volunteers.

Board Member Julie Shaw is spearheading the golf tournament and welcomes all comers to this year’s festivities. Shoreline is the perfect course for novices and even beginners and yet still offers unique challenges to the most experienced of players.

Hospice’s board of directors and the Schroers are also working with Shaw to get the players out and make this year’s tourney the best ever.  

“It’s truly a team effort,” said Shaw.

The tournament will begin with registration at 9 a.m. followed by the closest to pin contest at 10 a.m. The four-member team scramble will start at 11 a.m. 

Shaw and team have collected some exciting prizes for the participants and there will be a raffle with some additional special items to win. 

The cost is $50 which includes green fees and lunch, as well as a chance to win the various surprises.
