Bear Creek Music Fest is Saturday
The Bear Creek Music Festival begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bear Creek Winery. The festival features solo performer Cousin Curtiss, Anchorage jazz band Hot Club, Alec Lytle and Them Rounders, and Denali Cooks. Tickets for this 21-and-over event are $75, including two drinks of beer or wine and food, and are available at the winery or online at eventbrite.com.
There also will be door prizes and a silent auction during the festival. Parking is at Down East Saloon and Kachemak City Hall. Homer Trolley will haul everybody up to the festival free of charge. All proceeds benefit the Nikki Geragotelis (Fry) Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Homer Mariner Fast-pitch Softball Fund, two permanent funds managed by the Homer Foundation.
Hoop and poi camp starts soon
Hoop and poi teachers Kammi O Hoops and Aaron Stillwell present a hoop and poi camp 3-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 30-July 27 at the Homer Council on the Arts. Classes also will be held outdoors at various locations. For children age 6 and older and adults, the fee is $25 a session or $40 for two or $400 for the entire session. Two Homer-grown acts visit
Two bands with Homer and Alaska roots visit later this month. Performing on May 30 at Alice’s Champagne Palace is Portland-based, Alaska-born psychedelic rock band Animal Eyes. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Animal Eyes has toured Alaska the past three years, but after this year will take some time off to record a new album and travel. “Though we live in and operate out of Portland, Alaska still feels like home, and coming back is always a rich and cathartic experience. We owe so much to Alaska and all of our Alaskan friends for the inspiration, the wildness of both the land and the people, and for the support over the years,” said band member Colin McArthur. Performing on May 31, also at Alice’s, is Sisters, a Seattle band led by Homer’s own Andrew Vait with Emily Westman. Doors open at 8 p.m. Opening for Sisters is The Forest That Never Sleeps with Kat Moore. Sisters also plays June 2 in Anchorage at Chilkoot Charlie’s. Tickets are $15.
