Milo Fritz memoir included
in new anthology

“Anchorage Remembers” has been published by 49 Writers and is now available from Amazon. Its official launch is July 23 at the Anchorage Museum. The memoir anthology, which is part of Anchorage’s 2015 centennial celebration, spans 100 years of Anchorage history “in the words of those who lived it.” It includes a piece by Linda Fritz, “True Pioneer,” in which she reflects on her teenage experiences working as a nurse’s aide for her uncle, Dr. Milo Fritz, Alaska’s first ophthalmologist and legendary bush pilot. Dr. Fritz also was an Anchor Point pioneer and a former Alaska legislator.

“True Pioneer” is a precursor to a book-length memoir Linda Fritz is writing about Doc Fritz, who she calls “an extraordinary man who pioneered efforts to bring modern medicine to the farthest reaches of Alaska.” For more about “True Pioneer” and “Anchorage Remembers” and her coming book, visit Linda Fritz’s website at Lindafritz.org.

49 Writers holds retreat at Tutka Bay

49 Writers, the Alaska writers organization, sponsors the Tutka Bay Writers Retreat from Sept. 11-13. Ann Eriksson and Gary Geddes will run the program at this year’s retreat. Canadian novelist and biologist Eriksson combines her background in ecology with her life experiences to create works of fiction populated with compelling characters and grounded in nature. Geddes has written and edited more than 45 books of poetry, nonfiction, drama, fiction, criticism, translation and anthologies. He has won at least a dozen national and international literary awards.

The retreat is in The Widgeon, a converted crabbing boat at Tutka Bay Lodge. The fee is $600 for 49 Writers members and $650 for nonmembers. The retreat fee includes instruction, meals, lodging in shared cabins, hot tub, sauna and self-guided hiking. To register, visit 49writingcenter.org. Registration is limited to 18 participants.
