If your social media newsfeed has been clogged with talk about fake news and alternative facts, boy, do we have a holiday for you. Be afraid, Betsteroids, because on Saturday’s it’s the biggest celebration of the year for jokesters.
Expect some pranks on April 1, although in this truth challenged world, how the heck do you tell the difference? That’s the point with April Fool’s: It should sound true and plausible, with just a touch of fantasy to alert the listener that you might be suckered in if only you would stop and think.
It’s that realization that makes a good April Fool’s joke fun, the moment when you remember the day and smile at the silliness. The absolute best April Fool’s prank the Betster has seen in this town was the guy who drove around in a pickup truck with a gasoline pump hose dangling out of his gas tank. That one even made the police blotter, public verification of complete and total trickery. If you’re reading this, dude, hat’s off.
So sharpen up that wit, Betsteroids, and have some silly fun this weekend, maybe with these Best Bets:
BEST FOOD AND FUN BET: Today from 6-7 p.m., it’s the South Peninsula Athletic and Recreation Center’s big chowder feed fundraiser at Grace Ridge Brewery. Then at 7 p.m., Bunnell Street Arts Center holds a work-in-progress showing of “Where the Sea Breaks Its Back” with visiting artists Ryan Conarrow and Ping Chong.
BEST THANKS FOR ALL THE SHOTS BET: After 20 years of medical practice at Homer Medical Center, Dr. Randy Weist retires on Friday. He’s delivered babies, given vaccinations, diagnosed tough diseases and done his dang best to keep us healthy. Celebrate his accomplishments and his plan for a “slower, thoughtful, deeply” life with a retirement party at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Beluga Lake Lodge.
BEST GOOD AND GREEN BET: Stock up on spring reading and bring some color into your life with the Friends of the Homer Public Library’s Spring Book and Plant Sale. Members get first pick from 6-8 p.m. Friday — but you can join at the door — and nonmembers from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the library.
BEST JUST A LITTLE HILL BET: To get from the beach to snow requires some elevation gain, but that’s the challenge in the annual Sea to Ski Triathlon, a bike-swim-ski event starting at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mariner Park on the Spit. Watch out for bicyclists on the road and cheer them on.
BEST GET READY BET: Plan ahead for next week when Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Mike Navarre visits in two Town Meetings. At 3 p.m. April 6 at Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center he discusses property tax assessments. Then at 5:30 p.m. on the same day and at the same place he holds his big discussion on state and local finances, economic development and broad based taxes.
