With new breast MRI capabilities, South Peninsula Hospital is now the only location on the Kenai Peninsula where patients can receive an MRI-guided breast biopsy. What does that mean to you? Learn more at a free presentation, held in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the South Peninsula Hospital Training Center at 203 W. Pioneer Ave. Dr. Maureen Filipek, certified radiologist at the hospital, will discuss this new technology, as well as its appropriate use and applications. Dr. Greg Hough, new general surgeon with a specific interest in breast health and cancer surgery, also will join Dr. Filipek in this discussion. Dr. Filipek is certified by the American Board of Radiology and has a special interest in womens breast health. Before joining South Peninsula Hospital in 2010, she founded a task force in Oregon to help eliminate delays in breast cancer diagnosis, which results in faster care for women in need. In addition to her practice, she has authored numerous reports, articles and book chapters in her field of study. Dr. Hough, board certified in general surgery, joined the hospital this summer, after serving as a trauma surgeon with the US Air Force. His focus is on modern techniques, using a non-invasive approach to traditionally invasive procedures.
The event is free and open to the public. Healthy refreshments will be served. For more information, call 235-0397.
