Sitka Summer Music Festival musicians Zuill Bailey on cello and David Leisner on guitar will perform from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Bunnell Street Arts Center.
This intimate evening performance will feature Bailey in three Bach Cello Preludes and Leisner performing his own compositions. The two will perform together on Schubert’s “Arpeggione” Sonata and Falla’s “Suite Popular.”
Bailey is widely considered one of the premiere cellists in the world. A consummate concerto soloist Bailey performs with the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Minnesota, San Francisco, Toronto, Israel, Indianapolis and Dallas, among other leading orchestras around the world. Bailey is an exclusive recording artist with Telarc International. In addition to his extensive touring engagements, Bailey is the artistic director of El Paso Pro Musica and the Sitka Summer Music Festival and Series (Alaska) and professor of cello at the University of Texas at El Paso.
Leisner is a versatile musician with a multi-faceted career as an electrifying performing artist, a distinguished composer and a master teacher. He is “among the finest guitarists of all time,” according to American Record Guide.
Leisner’s career began with top prizes in both the 1975 Toronto and 1981 Geneva International Guitar Competitions. His recent seasons have taken him around the U.S., a major tour of Australia and New Zealand and debuts and reappearances in Japan, the Philippines, 11 European countries Puerto Rico and Mexico. Leisner is noted for his efforts to expand the guitar repertoire by premiering works from important composers such as Philip Glass and David Del Tredici as well as being a highly respected composer in his own right.
