Holy Santos Gang raising funds to record new album

Local band Los Holy Santos Gang has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the recording of its debut full-length album. The band hopes to raise in excess of $6,000 to offset the cost of the recording process. Holy Santos Gang includes lead vocalist and guitarist Rudy Multz, drummer Joel Mosier, lead guitarist and vocalist Steve Collins, and bassist and vocalist Dylan Smith. Premiums offered for pledges range from copies of the album to a full-length show by the band. Holy Santos Gang also had a music video produced by brothers Tehben and Jebarri Dean.

HCOA hires new office assistant

The Homer Council on the Arts has hired Denise Jantz as its new office assistant. Born and raised in Michigan, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in communications at Western Michigan University, Jantz came to Alaska in 1992. She has divided her time between Homer and McCarthy before settling full time in Homer in 2010. She has started several small businesses in McCarthy and Homer, including Coal Towne Creamery on the Spit, now known as Spit Licks. She also runs Homer Busy Bee, an errand service.

Youth art classes start at HCOA

Katy Countiss teaches youth art classes for grades K-3 and 4-8 starting in January. Classes for K-3 are 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 15 – Feb. 19. Classes for grades 4-8 are 3:45 – 5:15 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 16 – Feb 20. Both classes are at the Homer Council on the Arts. For information call 235-4288 or visit www.homerart.org.

Youth musical theater starts soon

In partnership with Pier One Theatre, the Homer Council on the Arts offers a youth musical theater workshop that culminates in the production of the family musical “Honk!,” based on the children’s story “The Ugly Duckling.” Musical Theatre workshop classes meet Mondays and Thursdays, 5 – 7 p.m., starting Jan. 14. Students who complete workshop classes are eligible to audition for the musical. Auditions will be held Jan. 26, followed by Monday and Thursday rehearsals until the performances on April 5, 6 and 7. Leaders for this program and the musical include Mary Langham, artistic director; Jennifer Schallock, musical director; and Maura Gibson, choreographer.
