Construction finished last month for Homer’s newest street, Eric Lane, a 1,200-foot side street off the lower end of West Hill Road. Built by Herndon Construction of Homer, the $925,000 project includes a sewer line as well a paved street, gutters and a sidewalk.
“I think it looks pretty nice,” said Homer Public Works Director Carey Meyer.
The new street opens up access to 14 lots in the Lillian Walli subdivision. The city had earlier put in a waterline as well as natural gas. Landowners will be responsible for financing electricity and phone lines.
Meyer said one landowner has already started site development.
Once construction and other costs have been determined, the city will submit to the Homer City Council for its consideration the final assessment for the Eric Lane Road and Sewer Special Assessment District.
Financing for the project came from a 0.5-percent loan from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and from the city’s Homer Accelerated Water and Sewer Funds. Property owners in the special assessment district will pay off the state and city loans, with 100 percent of the cost born by them.
The city will assume maintenance of the road, including snow plowing, Meyer said.
