JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON (AP) — The roar of airplanes will be a little more evident in Alaska’s largest city.

Officials at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson say the runway that runs east-to-west will be closed for about a month for repairs.

The east-west runway is the busiest at the Anchorage base. Base officials say in a release that more than two-thirds of flights use it since it has the least noise impact on the city.

The runway should be reopened by July 18, when noise levels should return to normal.

Military authorities say like most roadways in Alaska, the climate accelerates damage to the base runways. There’s only a four-month window in the summer suitable for repairs.
