Two fishermen about 9 p.m. Tuesday rescued a San Diego couple who misjudged the tide while in sit-on-top kayaks. Dave Seaman in the Adelante, fishing with Don Pitcher, picked up the husband and wife and got them and their kayaks safely to the harbor.
According to an Alaska State Trooper press release, the kayakers made a 911 call about 8:30 p.m. saying they needed medical assistance. Troopers and a harbor officer said they would be delayed in launching a boat and put out a notice to mariners. Seaman said he heard the alert and found the couple near the entrance to Eldred Passage. The couple wore dry suits and had good safety gear.
Homer Volunteer Fire Department medics met the kayakers at the harbor and took one to the hospital
