Two weeks after the Homer Winter Carnival and it’s time to get back to celebrating the season with the Anchor Point Snow Rondi, sponsored by the Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce.
This year’s theme: Up To Snow Good.
The fun starts with an auction at Chapman School at 7 p.m. today and continues through a community fish fry at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10221 at 4 p.m. Sunday.
“There are a lot of events going on, as there are every year,” said Dawson Slaughter, an Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce board member who is gathering donations and sponsors to help with the event. “It’s a fun event with a lot of support from the community and businesses that will hopefully continue for many years to come.”
Tonight’s auction, with Chris Story serving as auctioneer, isn’t just about taking home a new item or two. It also is about the 20-25 pool players looking for sponsorship in Friday’s pool tournament.
“There’s even some that come from as far away as Kenai,” said Jennifer Henley, another chamber board member active in organizing the four-day Rondi.
Also on Friday is a free family movie at Chapman School, beginning at 6 p.m. The movie is Rango, a 2011 computer-animated action comedy western film that won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Snacks will be available, with proceeds benefiting a seventh- and eighth-grade field trip. Also on Friday is community bingo at the Anchor Point Senior Center.
Saturday is action-packed. Rondi-ers can start the day with a hot breakfast at the Anchor Point Senior Center beginning at 9 a.m. Then it’s the parade from the Petro Express station, along the Sterling Highway to the Anchor River Inn.
No sooner is that over than the popular pinewood derby kicks off at Chapman School, followed closely by ski and snowshoe events and archery competitions.
A fun event in past years has been snowshoe softball. While it isn’t on the schedule this year, Henley said, “We have the snowshoes if anyone wants to do it.”
There’s breakfast again on Sunday, with the rest of the day focused on the Mountain Man Classic at the gun range just south of Anchor Point, snowmachine races at Griner Pit and, at Chapman School at 2 p.m., the ninth annual Snow Rondi Dog Show, with proceeds benefiting the Homer Animal Shelter. There are categories for biggest, smallest, best costume, friendliest, funniest, best manners or trickiest, most unique dog and dog that looks most like its owner.
“We’re limited to 30 well-behaved dogs, so register in advance,” said dog show organizer Debbie Poindexter, who can be contacted at 235-8671.
While the National Weather Service is calling for mostly cloudy weather with a chance of snow over the weekend, Anchor Point will be aglow with orange Snow Rondi hoodies for sale.
“Everybody will be standing out,” said Henley. “It will look like hunting season.”
