Homer defeats Redington, 66-0
The host Homer football team rolled to a 66-0 victory over Redington Sr. junior varsity Friday night in nonconference play.
This is the first year that Redington Sr. is open, and the school only enrolls underclassmen thus far, so the mismatch that was possible ended up happening as the Mariners improved to 2-4 overall.
Homer ended any suspense early by taking a 37-0 lead after one quarter and a 51-0 lead at halftime.
Michael Swoboda started the game with a 78-yard kickoff return for Homer. Josh Fisk and Teddy Croft then followed with long touchdown runs before Fisk returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown and capped the quarter with another touchdown run.
In the second quarter, Jaime Rios threw a touchdown pass to Jack Heimbold and Kyle Wells ran for a touchdown.
Rios ran for a touchdown in the third quarter, while Hunter Patton ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Homer ended the game with 306 yards of offense to Redington’s 99.
This weekend the Mariners travel to Valdez. The JV game is at 10 a.m., followed by the varsity game at 1 p.m.
Voz falls to Seward
The host Seahawks notched a Peninsula Conference football victory over the Cougars on Friday. The final score was 50-6.
Seward improved to 2-1 in the league and 2-4 overall, while Voznesenka dropped 0-3 and 0-5.
On Friday, Voznesenka plays its homecoming game against Redington. Action starts at 5 p.m.
Homer sweeps Time Trials
The Homer girls and boys cross-country teams swept the Homer Time Trials on Saturday in Homer.
The boys had 27 points, while Soldotna had 42 and Kenai Central had 67. On the girls side, Homer scored 34, Kenai had 44 and Soldotna had 47.
Soldotna’s Aaron Swedberg won the boys race on the flat, 5K course on the Homer Spit. Swedberg ran 16 minutes, 18 seconds, while Homer’s Jordan Beachy was second at 17:09 and SoHi’s Josh Shuler was third at 17:14.
Kenai’s Riana Boonstra was the girls winner in 18:45. Homer’s Megan Pitzman was second at 18:54, while Kenai’s Ithaca Bergholtz was third at 19:14.
This weekend the Mariner runners travels to Colony for the Cross Country Running Conference Championships. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
