Richard Herz, 82, of Baker City. Calif., died peacefully at home on June 7, 2013. There will be a memorial service for Richard at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the VFW Post 10221, Anchor Point.
Richard was born on June 15, 1930, in New York. As a young man he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. After serving in the corps, he owned his own business and worked as a tree surgeon in New York and Maine. He became somewhat semi retired and ventured out to California, Oregon and Hawaii before trying his hand at homesteading in Alaska when he was in his 60s. He had a homestead in Delta Junction before coming to Anchor Point as his preferred home away from home. He lived in Anchor Point for about 20 years before recently moving to Baker City, Ore. Richard enjoyed the weather in Baker City, going to the senior center for lunch and attending the Elkhorn Baptist Church.
Richard is survived by two sons, Gregory Herz of Winterport, Maine, and Clifford Herz of Bridgeport, Maine; three daughters, Robin Herz of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Tracy Herz of Daytona Beach Fla., and Dayna Herz of Bangor, Maine; a sister, Caroline Herz, of North Carolina; and very close friends and extended family Belva Olson, Belva’s son, Jody Herd and Belva’s niece, Angel Herd.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Elizabeth Herz.
