The Homer City Council will consider, at its July 27 meeting, an ordinance to spend more than $600,000 from its general fund savings account to bring the design of the proposed public safety building to the next stage. The complex includes a kitchen and dining space that rival most Homer restaurants and a lobby to include display space for the Willys Jeep Fire Engine 1.  

I encourage the city to re-evaluate the underlying assumptions that led to this extravagant and costly design before spending any more money on it. The existing 10 percent design documents are sufficient to engage public and staff discussions to develop a more reasonable and affordable project that will be less burden taxpayers for decades.
