The holiday season is here, and we all love to give. Maggie Alston, a seventh-grade student at Homer Middle School, wanted to help the pets at Homer Animal Shelter find homes during the holidays. She developed an idea to sell candy canes to her fellow students and teachers to help with the cost of spaying and neutering adopted animals. The money raised from the candy cane sale will be donated to Homer Animal Friends, a nonprofit organization that gives coupons toward reducing the cost of spaying and neutering animals when they are adopted. Maggie came up with this idea after spending most of her summer at the animal shelter walking and playing with the cats and dogs.
Maggie and seventh-grader Kendra Raymond are selling candy canes this week and next week in the mornings before school and at lunch. The sale ends Dec. 14 and the candy canes will be delivered to students Dec. 20 during eighth period. Candy canes are a dollar, which includes a festive tag and ribbon, candy cane, and delivery. If you’d like to donate, contact Maggie Alston at the school at 235-5700.
