The Homer Native Plant Society field trip on mushroom identification scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled. “Return of the Bark Beetle? The Changing Forest of the Kenai Peninsula” is the last hike of the summer offered by the Homer Native Plant Society. Dr. Ed Berg will lead this hike from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday starting at the Homestead Trailhead off Roger’s Loop. The hike includes visiting the Demonstration Forest. Hospice of Homer sponsors a talk by Ted Wiard, author and a nationally known professional in the field of grief, at 6 p.m. today in the Southwest Pilots Association building at 1230 Ocean Drive. Kachemak Bay Girl Scouts will be having a registration event from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Pratt Museum in conjunction with the exhibit Ocean Trash, Ocean Treasures. Families are invited to come sign up girls for Girl Scouts, try all the fun learning activities and help construct a new community art piece of recycled trash. Girl Scout membership is $20 and adult membership is $15. Scholarships are available. Girl Scouts is looking for leaders, especially for Kindergarten Daisies and 4th-6th grade Juniors. Hospice of Homer and Friends of Homer Public Library will present a panel
discussion on “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End,” the
bestselling book by Atul Gawande, at 6 p.m. Sept. 3 in the
Homer Public Library.

Nancy Lander, Brad Hughes and Rob Downey. A question-and-answer session will follow the

Ninilchik Emergency Services holds its 13th Annual 911 Benefit at 5 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Ninilchik Fair Grounds, Carol Bock Hall. The spaghetti dinner will be by donation and there will be auctions as well. Come meet the volunteer emergency services.

Expect delays on this lower Kenai Peninsula road project:
• Sterling Highway Mile 135 to 137 improvements: Road construction continues through September. Expect single-lane traffic, 10-minute delays, flagging and pilot car operations on the Sterling Highway from 10 p.m. Sundays through noon Fridays, through September.
