BP announced this week that it has begun accepting nominations for the 20th annual BP Teachers of Excellence program, recognizing Alaska teachers’ exceptional work.
Last year, Barbara Ann Veeck of West Homer Elementary School was awarded “Teacher of the Year” distinction for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. Katie Bynagle, another WHES teacher, was among the district’s five “Teachers of Excellence.”
The program honors K-12 teachers from public or private schools who have made important contributions to education and their communities over the past year. Each BP Teacher of Excellence receives a $500 gift card and a $500 matching grant to his or her school. BP also will select one Teacher of the Year who will receive a $1,500 scholarship for continuing education.
Anyone can nominate a BP Teacher of Excellence by visiting BPteachers.com. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 30.
“We are thrilled to recognize those teachers who make a lasting impact on the next generation of Alaskans by educating our children and who make our communities better places to live,” said Janet Weiss, BP Alaska regional president. “BP is honored to continue supporting this great program. It’s another way we are showing our commitment to Alaska.”
Since the program’s inception in 1995, BP has recognized more than 620 Alaska teachers. Last year, BP recognized 30 Teachers of Excellence from more than 1,400 nominations received from across the state.
