The Art Shop Gallery shows SPY Sunglasses, artful frame shades featurng the “Happy Lens,” which protects the eyes while allowing the long-wave blue light through, the light northerners crave when the days are dark. The show also features SPY Surfrider Helm sunglasses that are 100-percent biodegradable. The gallery is introducing an enamel and metal jewelry line of earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces by Janine Gibbons of Southeast Alaska.

Alaska artist Eleanor Jensen shows mixed media work on paper. “Nature is a concept that is both intricate and abstract. Nature is employed as an image, a place, a phenomenon, an ideal, a behavior, a system, a science and philosophy,” she writers in her artist’s statement. “It represents and refines both a physical and cultural realm. What is our association with nature? How do we perceive, experience and understand the natural world? These territories and boundaries are undoubtedly
complex and ambiguous. My concentration is on the edges and overlaps, the areas where we question our certainties and meditate on our positions. This work references the interconnectedness in nature but also considers a specific a nod intricate human consciousness within it.”

Fireweed at the Fireweed and Other Local Renderings, paintings by Dan Coe

Homer artist Dan Coe’s work can be seen from furniture to signs all around town. Raised in western Pennsylvania, he worked in newspaper graphic arts and clothing design before moving to Alaska. With fellow Grove City College, Pa., graduate Alex Hutnick, he started Baba Klub, a clothing company and store that mixed Pennsylvania’s European heritage with Andy Warhol pop art and the neo-hippie movement. In Alaska, Coe became known for his Handpainted Furniture line, custom paintings on renovated furniture. Coe also mentored with Brad Hughes to continue Hughes’ tradition of custom and artistic signs. More recently, Coe has become known for his fine art, including a recent commission to paint a fireweed mural installed on the Driftwood RV Park fence on Bunnell Avenue. His show features everything from handpainted furniture to fine art.

Homer artist Jean Steele works in an eclectic variety of media, including
jewelry, sculptural hand-built stoneware and raku and high-fired functional stoneware pottery. For her solo show she displays some recent work.
