The End of the Road Broomball tournament was a huge success March 29-30. The Bethel Fighting Pikes, Bethel Beavers and Whitehorse Capital Towing were uncannily matched with Homer Broomballers, Beluga Lake Bombers and Alice’s Scoundrels. There was an unprecedented number of tied games decided in overtime or shootouts.
Games opened Friday night and Saturday morning with a round-robin session which decided tournament placement. After lunch, a visit from the Easter Bunny and a Harlem Shake flash mob, the double-elimination tournament got underway. The close games continued with five more tied games including the championship game.
Yukon Broomball organizer Milford Allain scored the winning goal in overtime for Capital Towing, leaving the Beluga Lake Bombers in second place and the Bethel Fighting Pikes in third.
The awards ceremony at Alice’s Champagne Palace honored tournament MVPs Chris Gordon, goalie for the Beluga Lake Bombers, and Canadian goalie Margo Millett.
Homer Broomballers acknowledged outstanding players from league season: Jason Herreman, rookie of the year, Lucas Thoning, most improved player; Chris Gordon and Jessica Marx, best goalies; Seanna Gunn and Jesse Classen, best defenders; and Jennifer Bando and Josiah Campbell, MVPs. Ben Martin was awarded best sportsmanship. Liz Villarreal was honored for her work as Broomball Commissioner. Villarreal’s tireless efforts and hours of organization made the tournament possible.
