Women of the World perform
International a cappella group Women of the World perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Mariner Theatre. Sponsored by the Homer Council on the Arts, the vocalists from Japan, Italy, India and the U.S. sing in 29 different languages and have forged artistic identities shaped by their cultures. Mentored by Bobbie McFerrin, they also have played with the Boston Pops. HCOA describes their music as “borderless, spirited, carrying an undeniable message of unity and peace.” They also do a workshop with Homer Middle School students who will join them on the stage. Tickets are $15 HCOA members, $10 youth and $25 general, on sale at the Homer Bookstore and HCOA.
Watercolor workshop is Oct. 21-22
Watercolor artist and teacher Jan Thurston teaches “Let it Flow,” a beginning watercolor workshop, from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 21 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 22 at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 619 Sterling Highway. The fee is $35 and includes tuition and materials. The class is limited to 12 adults.

Anchorage author reads at KBC
Anchorage author Bryan Allen Fierro reads from his new book, “Dodger Blue Will Fill Your Soul,” at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Kachemak Bay Campus of the Kenai Peninsula College. Fierro holds a master of fine arts from Pacific University in Oregon. He grew up in Los Angeles and now lives in Anchorage, where he works as a firefighter and paramedic. Fierro is the recipient of the Poets and Writers Maureen Egen Writers Exchange Award in Fiction. Books will be available for sale and signing.
Artists invited to enter 10×10 show
Bunnell Street Arts Center invites member artists to submit work for its annual 10×10 show, to be held Nov. 18-Dec. 16. Artists submit works that are either 10-inches square or 10-inches cubed. The show aims to make art making and buying accessible to all. Works are due ready-to-hang by Nov. 14 and go on sale in a silent auction from Nov. 18-Dec. 2. A reception and close of the auction is 5-7 p.m. Dec. 2. Entry is free for members or $25 for new members joining at an introductory price. Homer Foundation seeks proposals for Giving Salmon sculpture
The Homer Foundation is requesting proposals from artists for a larger-than-life sized bronze salmon sculpture, The Giving Salmon. The Giving Salmon will be located on the grounds of the new Boat House Pavilion, which will be where the former Harbormaster’s office was located on the Homer Spit. Interested artists should apply online at www.callforentry.org. The deadline is Nov. 15. The sculpture will commemorate the foundation’s 25th anniversary and will be a permanent gift to the community. All donations deposited into The Giving Salmon will be distributed through the foundation’s year-round grants program. Alaska State Museum selects Bellamy for solo show
The Alaska State Museum, Juneau, has selected Halibut Cove sculptor Annette Bellamy to exhibit her work in a solo show at a date to be announced. Bellamy is one of eight Alaska artists from Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway who will have solo shows from March 2017 to the spring of 2019. Bellamy frequently works in ceramics, and her sculptures explore the natural resources of Alaska, focusing on both traditional and nontraditional uses of those resources. Other artists are Sara Tabbert of Fairbanks, Linda Infante Lyons of Anchorage, Carmel Anderson of Ketchikan, Daniel Papke of Skagway, Amy Meissner of Anchorage, Charles Rohrbacher of Juneau, Bellamy, and Donald Varnell of Ketchikan.
