Cabaret theater opens Friday
“Broadway Babies,” a musical theater cabaret, opens at 7 p.m. Friday with a second show also at 7 p.m. Saturday at Wasabi’s Fusion. Directed by Jessica Anne Williams, the show features music from Broadway hits such as “Oklahoma!,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” “Hairspray,” “Rent,” “Les Miserables” and others. Joining Williams are Nancy Chastain, Hannah Heimbuch, Maura Jones, Sabina Karwowski, Shenandoah Lush, Sydney Paulino, Chloe Pleznac, Margaret Quarton, Sierra Frost Smith and Madilynn Elkington Wood.
Tickets are $50 for front row seating, $240 for a table of six and $35 general admission, and includes appetizers and desserts. Eat dinner at Wasabi’s before the show and receive a 10-percent discount with tickets. Wasabi’s opens at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale online at homerart.org or at the Homer Council on the Arts. Plate Project opens Friday
Bunnell Street Arts Center’s annual Plate Project opens at 5 p.m. Friday followed by its annual meeting and a potluck. Coordinated by Ahna Iredale since 1994, the Plate Project features 100 unique art plates created by local potters and painters. Plates are given for membership donations of $100 or more.
Plates will be online for viewing as soon as the online gallery is ready at bunnellarts.org. Memberships at the $250 and above level may reserve plates anytime on Friday by phone or in person.
Poems in Place deadline extended to April 30
The Poems in Place Project, a collaboration of Alaska State Parks, the Alaska Center for the Book, and a steering committee of Alaska writers and poets, has extended its public call for poems celebrating the Wood-Tikchik State Park/Alegnagik State Recreation Site near Dillingham and the Independence Mine State Historical Park near Palmer. Alaskans now have until April 30 to submit up to three poems each. Poems can be written in response to the solicitation or poems previously written by an Alaska poet. An honorarium will be paid to the poets whose work is selected for installment.

Homer Youth String Orchestra plays May 4
The Homer Youth String Orchestra Club holds a spring concert at 4 p.m. May 4 at Alaska the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. The concert is free and open to the public and includes refreshments. Tammy Vollum-Matturro, artistic director of the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra, is the concert conductor. The Homer orchestra is joined by young musicians from the Central Peninsula Community Orchestra.
Alaska artists can apply for Anchorage Museum exhibitions
The Anchorage Museum is accepting submissions until July 1 for “All Alaska Juried XXXV” and project proposals for solo art exhibitions. “All Alaska Juried” is a biennial juried art exhibition established more than 30 years ago to encourage Alaska artists to create new works. This year’s juror is Portland Art Museum curator Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson. The winner of the Best of Show Award receives a $1,000 prize. “All Alaska Juried XXXV” opens Nov. 7 and is on view through Feb. 1, 2015, at the Anchorage Museum. Afterward the exhibition will tour the state for one year, including to The Bear Gallery in Fairbanks.
The Anchorage Museum’s Patricia B. Wolf Solo Exhibition Series highlights new bodies of work by individual Alaska artists. Once every three years, Alaska artists are invited to submit applications to a selection committee comprised of museum staff and art professionals. These solo art exhibitions will be scheduled starting in 2016. Interested artists can learn more and apply for both opportunities at callforentry.org.
