The Homer Mariner swim team has returned from the Seward Invitational on Saturday. Participating teams included Colony, Kenai, Soldotna, Valdez and Wasilla, in addition to Homer and Seward.
“Lauren Kuhns, Cheyanne Smith and Remi Nagle had strong performances,” said Head Coach Scott Smith. “(Kuhns) placed second in the 500 Free and third in the 200 IM, perhaps the most challenging races to swim.”
Smith claimed third place in the 500 free and 100 breast. Nagle placed second in the 100 fly and third in the 200 IM.
“Each of our swimmers has at least one personal best time,” said Smith. He also noted that “Leo Castellani dropped 11.78 seconds for the largest drop in time.”
Next up for the Mariner swim and dive teams is this weekend’s Palmer Invite, with 14 schools competing. It is the last meet of the season before Regions in Soldotna.
“It is a two-day championship format meet with preliminary and finals swimming,” said Smith.
“It will let us know how we really stack up against the other teams.”
Although the end of the season is drawing near, Smith said it is still early for the athletes to begin tapering off.
“Our plan is to taper for Regions and give our best possible performances there,” he said.
Team scores from the Seward meet were not available. Following are results for the Homer team.
