Volleyball
The Homer Mariners varsity volleyball team shut out the competition Tuesday with a win over Kenai Central High School in a non-conference home game, their first of the season.
The Mariner girls topped the Cardinals by winning three straight games in the set, though they were all close as the Kenai team gave them a run for their money.
Head Coach Erin Brege said, having seen Kenai in recent tournaments, her team was expecting tough competition, which is what they got.
The Cardinals made her players work for it, she said.
Still, the Mariners prevailed 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21 in close games where the teams inched ahead of each other by a point or two before tying it up again.
The Mariners have been having to switch things up a lot over the past few weeks, Brege said, between changes for tournament play and a last minute switch the day before Tuesday’s game when her setter, junior Brianna Hetrick, was injured and had to sit the game out.
Hetrick will hopefully be returning soon, Brege said.
